How our youth basketball leagues work
All skill levels welcome
Beginners and experienced players play together, and every team gets a mix of both. There are no tryouts or cuts. Register before teams form, the date shown on each league, and your child is guaranteed a spot on a team.
Family-run since 1996
Master Sports is a family-run San Diego company that has run youth sports programs since 1996. More than 3,000 kids play in our leagues each year, and our leagues in Carlsbad, Encinitas and Vista are run with those cities.
Grades K–8, boys and girls
Kids play with others their age, grouped by school grade, such as 3rd–4th grade. Boys, girls and coed groups are offered depending on the season and location.
One practice a week, plus games
Teams practice about an hour once a week, usually on a weekday afternoon or evening. Each league’s page lists its game days and times.
Background-checked coaches
Most coaches are parent volunteers, and every adult volunteer passes a LiveScan fingerprint background check before team activities begin. Parents can sign up to coach their own child’s team.
Playoffs and a championship from 3rd grade
Kindergarten through 2nd grade games aren’t scored. From 3rd grade up, games are scored and the season ends with playoffs and a championship game.
Jersey, shorts and the Master Sports app
Every player gets a reversible jersey and shorts to keep. Schedules and standings are on each league’s page and in the Master Sports app.
Frequently asked questions
Is my child too new to basketball to join?
No. All skill levels are welcome, and every team gets a mix of beginners and experienced players. If your child would rather start with lessons, Master Sports also offers Basketball Skill Builder classes.
Will my child make a team?
Yes, as long as you register before teams form. That date is shown on each league, and every child registered by then is placed on a team, whatever their skill level.
Which group should my child sign up for?
Choose your child’s current school grade. For summer leagues, use the grade they just finished: a 4th grader this spring plays in the 3rd–4th grade group this summer.
Can my child play with older kids?
Yes. Players can play up in an older group, but not down. Groups can’t be changed once teams form.
Can girls play?
Yes. Girls groups are offered for some grades, most often in winter and summer, and girls can join the boys groups in any season.
What if a group is full?
You can join the waitlist. If a spot opens, we email you a registration link that’s good for 24 hours.
Can my child be on a friend’s team?
We can’t take teammate requests, because teams are drafted to be evenly matched. Kids of a team’s head and assistant coaches play on that team, so coaching together is the one way to keep two kids together.
When will we hear from the coach?
Usually one to two weeks after teams form. League emails go to the email address on your Master Sports account.
What if the practice time doesn’t work for us?
Players can’t switch teams for practice conflicts. Ask your coach about another time, or volunteer to coach and choose the practice time yourself.
Where do I find the game schedule?
We email you when schedules are posted, usually one to two weeks before the first game. They’re also on your child’s league page and in the Master Sports app.
Can I coach?
Yes. Parents, older siblings and grandparents are welcome to volunteer. Every adult volunteer passes a LiveScan fingerprint background check before team activities begin.
